Even if the quality of play in Major League Soccer is “different level” from the European game, David Beckham thinks Lionel Messi will need some time to adjust.

Beckham, a co-owner of Inter Miami and a former midfielder for Manchester United and Real Madrid, saw Messi participate in his first practice session with the team on Tuesday after agreeing to a two and a half year deal.

After joining the squad on Saturday, Messi’s former Barcelona teammate Sergio Busquets also trained there under the direction of former Argentina and Barcelona coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-84715″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-according-to-inter-miami-co-owner-david-beckham-lionel-messi-will-need-time-to-adjust-to-the-major-league-soccer-download-2023-07-19t170057.321.jpg” alt=”” width=”1377″ height=”916″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-according-to-inter-miami-co-owner-david-beckham-lionel-messi-will-need-time-to-adjust-to-the-major-league-soccer-download-2023-07-19t170057.321.jpg 275w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-according-to-inter-miami-co-owner-david-beckham-lionel-messi-will-need-time-to-adjust-to-the-major-league-soccer-download-2023-07-19t170057.321-150×100.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1377px) 100vw, 1377px” />

The Englishman remarked, “Leo and Sergio are going to require time to adjust no matter how talented he is, no matter what his size is.

We must be patient, he continued, adding that they can surprise us or we might start winning every game.

Beckham said that the Argentine may not necessarily start Friday’s Leagues Cup match against Mexican team Cruz Azul, so Miami supporters may need to exercise some patience.

“Leo will play some portion of the game, but it will be up to the coach (and) it’ll be up to Leo to determine whether he’s ready,” added Beckham. “We know he’s been away for a few weeks with his family, but he looks smart, he looks wonderful, but he’s going to need time to adjust as well.

When Beckham joined the Galaxy in 2007, when Major League Soccer had only 13 teams as opposed to 29 now and the level of play was noticeably lower, he was the biggest star to make the transition to the league.

In contrast, Beckham said that nothing had changed in one particular area.

“One of the parallels is that everyone expected LA would win everything when I first arrived. Nobody else is going to win anything; LA is going to win every game, 7-0 or 8-0, he said.

Nevertheless, the Galaxy failed to even qualify for the playoffs in Beckham’s first two seasons despite his arrival.

In 2007 and 2008, LA placed last in the Western Conference, but after losing in the championship game in 2009, they went on to win the MLS Cup in 2011 and 2012.

“Those first two years for me, it was a challenge, getting used to everything, and bringing the club and the league to be a little bit more professional, but things changed very quickly,” he remarked.

“I began to appreciate the game of soccer much more, not only because we were winning, but also because I could see the changes being made, such as the academy equipment entering each of the teams… We’ve reached a point where things have unquestionably changed from 2007,” he remarked.

Several international players who entered the league later in their careers have found it challenging to succeed, even if the caliber of the MLS is still far lower than that of the best leagues in Europe, where Messi has played his entire club career.

Some difficulties players have encountered include playing on artificial surfaces, switching between time zones often, and having teammates who may not share their perspective or possess the necessary technical skills.

Despite acknowledging that Messi’s effect on the field may not be as immediate as some may be expecting, Beckham has little doubt that he will be a success.

“It’s a different style of football, it’s a slightly different level than what obviously some of the players that are coming in are used to,” he said.

“But at the end of the day, the level of football in this country right now is a good level, it’s a great level, so there are going to be moments where we have to be patient,” he remarked.
