Due to a hamstring issue, Marcus Stoinis is questionable for Australia’s World Cup opener against India

After suffering a hamstring injury in a one-day international against the hosts last month, Australia all-rounder Marcus Stoinis is “touch and go” for Australia’s World Cup opener against India at the weekend, coach Andrew McDonald said on Thursday.

In doubt about his health before Sunday’s opening in Chennai, the 34-year-old pulled up sore after Australia’s first game of their 2-1 series loss and missed two warm-up matches.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-221103″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-to-increase-sales-during-the-icc-cricket-world-cup-dominos-is-providing-discounts–750×422.png” alt=”theindiaprint.com to increase sales during the icc cricket world cup dominos is providing discounts” width=”1479″ height=”832″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-to-increase-sales-during-the-icc-cricket-world-cup-dominos-is-providing-discounts–750×422.png 750w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-to-increase-sales-during-the-icc-cricket-world-cup-dominos-is-providing-discounts–768×432.png 768w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-to-increase-sales-during-the-icc-cricket-world-cup-dominos-is-providing-discounts–390×220.png 390w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-to-increase-sales-during-the-icc-cricket-world-cup-dominos-is-providing-discounts–150×84.png 150w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-to-increase-sales-during-the-icc-cricket-world-cup-dominos-is-providing-discounts-.png 809w” sizes=”(max-width: 1479px) 100vw, 1479px” title=”Due to a hamstring issue, Marcus Stoinis is questionable for Australia's World Cup opener against India 3″>

“That took place after the game in Mohali. After waking up somewhat uncomfortable after that game, additional examination revealed that he had a little hamstring tear, and he is now just recovering, McDonald told Australian reporters.

“Game 1 is going to be close. He hasn’t definitely been ruled out of that, but we weren’t willing to take a chance on him in those exhibition matches.

Therefore, it’s likely that he’s being played a little more slowly with the idea that the next days will be crucial for him to push for selection for game one. We’ll watch to see what happens.

Stoinis is one of Australia’s five all-rounders, all of whom are anticipated to be key players in the team’s quest for a sixth World Cup victory.

Adam Zampa, their lone specialist spinner, had his workload controlled ahead of the competition, according to McDonald.

“He did pull up sore from the second game in the ODI series, but nothing significant,” McDonald added.

Travis Head, the opening batsman, is also on the mend after breaking his hand, and McDonald said he anticipated an official report on Head’s condition by next Wednesday or Thursday.

“That will give us a lot more information as to the final time frames and when he potentially can join the group, but until we get that then he’ll remain at home training and prepping his body as much as he can,” McDonald said.
