“What About The Batters’ Inability to Score Big Runs Also?” Sunil Gavaskar discusses the significance of the Ranji Trophy for players before to the Test Series

The tremendous batting performance of the Indian batsmen in the current Test series against England was addressed by batting legend Sunil Gavaskar. The Indian hitters have fallen short of expectations in the first two Test matches against the inexperienced English spin attack.

Shubman Gill also struck a century in Vizag, but he was inconsistent in the red-ball format. Yashasvi Jaiswal is the only player for the hosts who has shown consistency and potential with the bat.

Before starting a Test series, Gavaskar said it’s crucial for players to play first-class matches in order to prepare mentally.

In his Mid-Day column, Gavaskar said, “What the batters’ inability to get big runs also shows how important it is for both batters and bowlers to play some first-class [Ranji] games and get themselves in the right frame of mind for the longer format of the game before a Test match series.”

“It would have been ideal for the batters to get into the groove for the Test series by playing a couple of games, and the Ranji Trophy had started,” he said.

A number of Indian batsmen, notably captain Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer, and KS Bharat, are being criticized for their recent poor batting performances.

In the center of the pitch at Vizag, rookie Rajat Patidar was also unable to create an impression. Virat Kohli, who is now on a brief leave of absence for personal reasons, was much missed by India.

The legendary batsman was, nevertheless, quite pleased with Yashasvi Jaiswal’s meticulous double century.

“In the second Test match, Yashasvi Jaiswal demonstrated his ability to pick things up quickly by making sure he didn’t miss out on a hundred as he did in the first Test match,” wrote Gavaskar.

Once again, as in the first Test, most of the other batsmen got going and then gave away their wickets, so India needed someone to keep the innings together with a huge century, he said.
