When she made her acting debut at age five, the actress intended to become a communicator. Nevertheless, she turned to acting to help her family during a difficult financial period. She is Tanuja, that’s for sure.

At the age of five, Tanuja made her screen debut in the 1950 film Hamari Beti, when her mother Shobna Samarth had her perform as a young Nutan. However, the actress informed her mother, “Abhi merko kaam nahi karna hai, meri awaaz ek dum chuhiya jaisi hai,” after seeing the first film rushes. But her mother forced her watch the whole movie in exchange for a drink of lemonade.

The actress studied at a Swiss English-speaking school, but not long after, her family had financial difficulties, and she was summoned back home. Speaking on the same subject, Tanuja said in an interview that her family’s financial circumstances were a bit tight when she returned home for vacation after graduating from high school in 1960. Since my sister had already been married, it would not have been fair to kind of expect her to take care of the family; instead, it was my responsibility as the next in line to do so. It’s the reason I went to work. My mother wasn’t feeling well, and I had a younger brother and sister who were still in school. I so entered the field for financial reasons rather than by choice.

In 1961, Tanuja gained recognition with the release of Humari Yaad Aayegi. Kidar Sharma directed the movie, and the actress gives him credit for teaching her how to speak Hindi and look in the camera. She also related an occasion in which the director slapped her for laughing uncontrollably while she was supposed to weep and said, “I’m not in the mood to cry today.”

Tanuja started crying right away after the director hit her because he was annoyed and furious with her outbursts. Tanuja’s mother smacked her again when she informed her about the event, and she carried the sobbing Tanuja to the set where she told the director, “Now she is crying.” You may carry on with the shot. Memdidi, Chand Aur Suraj, Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi, Paisa Ya Pyaar, Jewel Thief, Nai Roshni, Jeene Ki Raah, Anubhav, Mere Jeevan Saathi—which also featured Rajesh Khanna—Haathi Mere Saathi, and Do Chor are a few of her popular films.

The actress has two children, Tanisha and Kajol, who are also Bollywood actors, from her marriage to director Shomu Mukherjee. Her older daughter Kajol is a well-known actress who has starred in movies like Baazigar, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Fanaa, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge, and others. She is married to Bollywood superstar Ajay Devgn, who has produced many successful blockbusters.
