In Poor Things, Emma Stone gives a performance that defines her career

Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things is an artsy, quirky comedy that tells a really unique and captivating story with wit, vigor, and flair. The same-titled book by Alasdair Gray served as the inspiration for Lanthimos’s film, which is essentially a modern retelling of the Frankenstein tale with elements of My Fair Lady and Alice in Wonderland. Although the picture is richer than his previous works, Lanthimos’s signature scathing dark humor is still there in full measure.

The video explores the concept of identity, demystifies patriarchy, and exposes the false conservatism of Victorian society. It is set in Victorian-era Scotland. The way Tony McNamara’s script captures the unpleasant aspects of a society that puts more emphasis on appearance than content makes it a piece of art in and of itself. The picture is intricately complicated in its production, art, and set design, and it works on many levels. It also has a visually distinctive palette. Despite creating a universe that differs from his familiar surroundings, Lanthimos succeeds above his expectations. His signature simplicity and realistic surroundings are a thing of the past.

This is the tale of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), who is re-educated in the real world after being given an odd “second life” by Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). As the story goes on, Bella leaves her figuratively confined laboratory upbringing behind and enters the real world, where she is confronted with men, sex, class, poverty, and gendered ownership, among other things. Eventually, Bella searches out her own autonomy and rejects any male attempts to limit, control, and protect her. Along the road, she makes errors and picks up lessons. One such error is Bella’s early sexual awakening when she falls in love with Duncan Wedderburn (Ruffalo), a debauched, sexually driven rake.

Cultural significance is important to Lanthimos’s bizarre but compelling universe. It’s inspiring to see Bella’s efforts to break free from the patriarchal system and go on a self-discovery and agency journey. Her restricted perspective and sense of self are challenged by people and situations she meets as her education in the real world advances.

The story by Lanthimos offers intriguing concepts that flow to an understandable meter, and it is based in art and creativity. The unique sounds of Jerskin Fendrix’s music enhance the story and add to its originality. Major transitions may occur without any lag because of Yorgos Mavropsaridis’s fluid and fluid editing. Enough mystery, tension, and drive are provided by the steady tempo to make this an exceptionally fascinating and enjoyable experience. Robbie Ryan’s stunning cinematography, which defines his point of view, elegantly highlights the pivotal moments in this plea.

The performers in this production give their all to each part, giving their all to the point that you never get a boring moment. While Ruffalo, Dafoe, and Youssef do a great job, Emma Stone steals the show. Whether or not she takes home the coveted Oscar, she makes this a performance that defines her career, and for that, she deserves recognition as an actress who dared to try something new. This is a thought-provoking and enjoyable dark comedy!
