The first movie in the five-part Twilight Saga series, Twilight, was released more than 15 years ago. It seems that the romantic fantasy movie is once again at the forefront of popular culture. Rumors of a potential TV revival of the wildly popular series, which was based on the same-titled novels by author Stephenie Meyer, started to surface in April 2023. Michael Burns, vice chairman of Lionsgate, said on March 5 that the TV version is being developed. Burns said that an animated series is being produced for the adaptation during a speech at the Morgan Stanley media conference.

“We’re going to launch the Twilight series, an animated series, and I think there’ll be a lot of interest in that,” Burns said. Many people were surprised by this since they thought the relaunch would be live-action. Erik Feig, the former co-president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, and Wyck Godfrey, the producer of the Twilight Saga picture, will serve as executive producers of the next Twilight series. Stephenie Meyer, the author, is anticipated to contribute to the series as well. To what degree the TV show will stick to Stephanie Meyer’s novels or whether it will go off course is yet unknown, however.

The 2020 companion novel Midnight Sun by Stephanie Meyer, which recounted Twilight from Edward Cullen’s point of view, was the last contribution to the Twilight world.

On November 21, 2008, Kristen Stewart played the 17-year-old student Bella Swan in the first Twilight film, which starred Robert Pattinson as the vampire Edward Cullen. Four further films in the series were produced in response to the original film’s surprising success: New Moon (November 20, 2009), Eclipse (June 30, 2010), Breaking Dawn (Part 1) (November 18, 2011), and Breaking Dawn (Part 2) (November 16, 2012). The series developed a sizable fan following and brought in about $5.28 billion in revenue globally.

Director of Twilight Catherine Hardwicke was a guest on the Happy Sad Confused podcast last year. Hardwicke said on the podcast that she would support Jacob Elordi and Jenna Ortega in the roles of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan, respectively, if the films were to be produced today. She supported Jacob Black, played by actor Lewis Tan.

There are more franchises than Twilight that will soon get a TV adaptation. The formal announcement that Warner Bros. Discovery will create a 10-season television series based on the Harry Potter novels came in February. The show will premiere in 2026. The show’s executive producer will be J.K. Rowling.
