Shoaib Bashir becomes the youngest English bowler to take several figers before turning 21 in the IND vs. ENG match

Day three of the fifth and final Test of the five-match series took place at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on Saturday, and before he turned 21, England’s youthful off-spinner Shoaib Bashir became the first bowler to record two 5-wicket hauls in Test cricket.

Test cricket, as they say, is the ultimate test of patience, tenacity, and resolve. England’s Shoaib Bashir demonstrated all three of these qualities as he worked magic to win his second five-wicket haul of his career in the team’s fifth Test match against India at Dharamshala.

Despite his inexperience, Bashir—who had been sick before the game—was given the enormous burden of delivering for very lengthy periods. The 20-year-old bowled a marathon of 46 overs, which was the longest of any English bowler.

The only other Englishmen with one fifer before twenty-one are Bill Voce, James Anderson, and Rehan Ahmed.

On the third day of the Test match, Bashis showed off his skill as he skillfully navigated around the Indian batting order, taking the much sought-after wicket of Jasprit Bumrah (20) to clinch his second five-wicket haul in Test cricket before turning 21. Bashir sent debutantes Devdutt Padikkal (65 years old) and Sarfaraz Khan (56 years old) back, unable to turn their fifties into tons. His other victims were Dhruv Jurel, fifteen. Bashir’s final score was 46.1-5-173-5.

He did not play in the third Test, but in the fourth game before that (5/119 & 3/79), he grabbed his first wicket. He has quickly amassed 17 Test wickets at an average of 33.35 with another five-fer. Earlier in the 4th Test at the JSCA International Complex in Ranchi, Bashir created history by being the second-youngest English bowler to capture five wickets in a Test match. The record for the youngest bowler from England to take five wickets is held by Rehan Ahmed.

At eighteen years and 126 days old, Rehan completed the feat. On the other hand, Bashir reached the age of twenty years and one hundred and thirty-three days. Bashir is one of six English spinners to have repeated 5-wicket hauls in Test matches against India.
